Why Is Katy Perry in the lyric of my new ukulele song?
I recently bought myself a ukulele with birthday money my two sisters sent me! Within a few hours I had learned enough chords to play “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” and posted it on YouTube! It got several views!

One morning recently I was watching “Good Morning America” and they were promoting a contest where high schools could submit a video to the tune of Katy Perry’s new single, “Roar”. As she got out of the car, she walked down through fans who were behind a rope line. At one point she stopped at a guy who had his cell phone and quickly took a “Selfie” of the two of them! He seemed ecstatic!

Well, that scene got me to thinking about how cell phone cameras have changed our lives! We can share each event, big or small, in our life! We can snap photos at car accidents, other events – remember all those videos and stills taken at the Boston Marathon tragedy?

So, later that day I was practicing and still learning my ukulele. As a songwriter, one of the best ways to learn how to play a new
instrument is to write songs with the new chords learned! So as I was playing around on it I started singing…”I’m gonna take a Selfie….ummm….when I get to meet Katy Perry…” “How fun”, I thought!
So I continued and ended up with this lyric and song called, “SELFIE”
I hope you enjoy the song and please feel free to comment or share this blog post or the song with your friends!
Musically yours!

IT’S TIME!

IT’S Time!

The creation process of writing a song never ceases to amaze me. Some songs can take several hours, several sessions. One song I have I started over 20 years ago and I’m still not happy with the final product!! And sometimes a song practically writes itself in mere minutes.

That’s what happened last Saturday!

Saturday morning I awoke and checked my email – a music supervisor was looking for a song with specific criteria about leaving a situation and going home. Some 35 minutes later I had a full lyric and after another 35 minutes – by Noon – I had the music. I did a quick guitar/vocal demo, submitted to the opportunity and I hope for the best.

I placed it today on Soundcloud without promotion – someone in Germany has already “Favorited” the song so thought I’d share….”It’s Time”…

Have a great and musical weekend!

Dave – A Songwriter’s Journey

I thought it might be usefull and cathartic to look back over this past year and celebrate those things that changed my life! I will have a separate post for each “Gratitude” so bookmark this and check back often to see where I am at in being grateful! They won’t be in chronological order but as I remember them!

However, the first I am grateful for is Madalyn McHugh’s recording of a song co-written with Greg Shields and Bobby Rennert called “THIS SIDE OF LOVE”! The song was written three years ago at a Tunesmith writer’s event.

It started with my recieving the weekly RowFax listing for January 12th of artists looking for songs for their CD projects. The listing read as:

“Madalyn McHugh/Creative Soul Records/Eric Copeland/January/City: Thompsons Station, TN/Pitch Preference: MP3/Contact: xxxxx@gmail.com Description: Upbeat pop Country; a la Carrie Underwood’s “All American Girl,” or Kellie Pickler’s “Best Days of Your Life.” The song needs to have an upbeat feel, and be a belter for an alto. The artist is 18, so the song must be reflective of that age; no bar songs, offensive lyrics, or honky tonk type things. The lyrics must be positive, and can also be about God as this is a Christian artist. We have all the other songs we need, so please only send songs that fit the song description above. No ballads or P&W please. The artist will be recording at a major Nashville studio with the some of the top session players and engineers in the business, so besides standard mechanical royalties, you will have an incredible version of your song. Please send an MP3 with lyrics”

If you notice, the listing states that “We have all the other songs we need…” in other words this was to be the final selected song!!

So, based on that the only logical song from the Arnybarn Music catalog was “This Side of Love” (TSOL)!! Well, I believe I heard back from Eric at Creative Soul Records the next day or the day after that! They loved the song and were going to record it! Though a co-write, I finally was going to be part of an official “Song Cut”!! – for more detail see my previous post at dream!

Madalyn then decided later to release TSOL as her first SINGLE off her CD, Stepping Stone!

So this wonderful song with it’s hopeful message is now being heard on the radio and in her concerts! I am so grateful for Madalyn’s talent in singing the song and those around her supporting that talent which now has made TSOL a major event in this year for me. Visit her website for more examples of her CD – the whole album is wonderful!

I will always be grateful for being a part of “THIS SIDE OF LOVE”!!!

Dave Colvin’s 1st Christmas CD!!

Dave Colvin | Christmas Memory | CD Baby Music Store.

Hope you enjoy my first Christmas CD “Christmas Memory”!! Happy Holidays!

Dave Colvin

In late 2007 I was walking past our stereo and happened to glance down. On top of the turntable was my copy of the late/great Kenny Rankin’s Christmas CD. On the cover is a depiction of the three wise men and the Star of Bethlehem.
I stopped in my tracks! “One of these days…”, I thought, “I need to write a new song about the three wise men (kings)” As far as I knew the most famous song was “We Three Kings”.
So inspired, I went over to my 100+ year old grand upright piano and started playing some chords. One thing I learned from watching Paul McCartney discuss the songs he wrote for his “Chaos & Creation In The Backyard” CD – he allows himself to throw out phrases while playing and see where it leads him. So in thinking about the three wise men I sang, “One brought gold…..” “Hmmm” I thought, I know what the next lines will be! “One brought Myrrh…” (I had to look up how to spell that one.) The song really almost wrote itself!
2007 was a turning point for me as far as my songwriting is concerned. I am not sure why but beginning with a song I wrote in August called “Change The Way” there was a maturity and growth to my writing that had not been evident prior to that song. It was immediately followed by another song co-written by my Wife, Debbie, called “Gently Falls” which now can be heard in the Carbon Creek episode of season 2 of the TV series “Star Trek: Enterprise”!
So on December 15th, 2007 I finished “This Child Of Bethlehem” and asked Debbie to come in to hear it. With the old upright I must have my back to her so I wasn’t able to see her reaction as I was singing the song. When I finished, I turned around to discover she was wiping tears from her eyes! I asked “What’s the matter? Was it that bad?” She chuckled and said, “No. it’s BEAUTIFUL”!!
Two weeks later we attended the New Year’s Day service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Antioch, TN. Being New Year’s Day , there was only about 6 people including the Rector in attendance! At the end of the service, Debbie asked the other’s if I could sing my new song for them of which they replied “Of course!”
Singing a capella, my voice really carried in the nearly empty sanctuary! They all thought the song was very good!
Since then it has been my dream for the song to become a Christmas time standard! The track you hear was produced by Kent Goodson of Digitracks Demo Service here in Nashville. Kent has done many of my demos over the years. The wonderful fiddle you hear in the song was played by Suzanne Rohrer a.k.a. The Fiddle Queen!
Last year, I re-recorded the vocal and added the song to MY first Christmas CD “Christmas Memory“!

I had always wanted to make a video of the song but could not find the right images to make it the best it can be. I recently discovered a new website called www.FreeBibleImages.org that allows the downloading of their images as long as they are used to tell the stories of the Bible accurately! The photos are perfect for the song I believe!
Please enjoy the song/video – feel free to share it on your Facebook or websites or email it to family/friends! I wrote it to be heard and share the story of the 3 Wise Men who followed a star to find Jesus! Don’t forget to comment below as well!
Merry Christmas!!

The Secret To Success!!…??

I know I said esterday on Facebook how much I love getting to do what I love! But there is so much cool stuff going on with Arnybarn Music – much I can’t share yet because to be treated like a professional one must ACT like a professional. When you do act professionally I can assure you the major players in whatever your industry is, will treat you professionally as well!
Someone recently wanted me to share the “secrets” of how I got a song on Star Trek Enterprise or got a song(s) cut. Well there is no ‘secret’! Hard work and having a good product and a splash of luck (the point where opportunity meets preparation) – that is the “secret”.
Also, eliminating any shoulder chips and eliminating negativity – in my case no longer asking for song critiques – all of this helps move things along!
Believe in yourself first!
Best to all

Arnybarn Music logoThe President, four years before, had inherited the worst economic downturn in American history. Since taking office four years ago, economic stimulus programs had been forced through Congress providing businesses, states and counties much needed capital with which to use to create jobs. The building of roads, bridges and government buildings was employing construction workers on a large scale!
The stock market was still stagnant; though there were signs of stock values starting to rise again…the same rise in values could be seen on home prices. Food and fuel costs continued to rise, leaving millions of Americans unable to climb out of poverty. Unemployment continued to rise but was showing signs of coming down due to the local and Federal jobs being created with the stimulus monies. But the unemployment rate was still unacceptably high at around 20%.

The voting public had every right to be impatient with the President and deny him a second term. But they did not deny him. In fact, the year was 1936 And Franklin Delano Roosevelt was re-elected by the largest margin in U.S. history up to that date winning 46 out of 48 states and 60.8% of the popular vote and 523 electoral votes to 8 for  Republican opponent Alf Landon.

The voters understood that the economic problems they suffered from were going to take longer than 4 years to fix. They saw jobs starting to be created. They saw the small signs of economic recovery and knew patience was necessary. They helped their neighbor! There were no Blue or Red states! They understood that the policies of the previous 12 years of Harding’s/Coolidge’s and Hoover’s  “hands off big business” policies had gotten the country in the mess it was in and now was not the time to return to those policies!

In many ways 2012 is very much like 1936!  The 2008 economic downturn was the worst since the Great Depression! But, we now see signs such as a steady, falling unemployment rate, 5,200,000 new jobs created in the past 30 months, rising home values, increases in home sales, a re-vitalized auto industry getting American workers in new cars!

Our Grandparents knew it takes longer than 4 years to fix a major economic downturn. We’ve become a culture of seeking instant gratification. I guess we expected our President to enter office, wave some magical wand and instantly fix the problems that had occurred.

In February of 2009, Obama’s first month in office 750,000 people lost their jobs. The fact that that number was stopped and turned around to jobs being created is by itself amazing to me. But I guess since we didn’t turn the 750k job loss into 750k job creations each month was not enough to satisfy our need. But that type of job creation was never possible. Thousands of jobs were lost because they are no longer necessary.
We are moving away from a manufacturing based economy to a services based economy. The manufacturing of products is being outsourced to other countries where the cost of Labor is much less than it is here. It is a bottom line business decision! Technology is also eliminating jobs we used to need. For example, in my case, I for years was a Cash Manager for healthcare companies in their accounting departments. But the advent of new software and online administration of banking processes eventually allowed the banks to provide Cash Management services to companies, especially smaller companies. So twice in three years, the company I worked for was sold to a competitor and my job was deemed not needed. In fact, I was let go in February of 2009 so my job was one of those 750,000 jobs that was lost that month!
But, I used that loss as an opportunity to start my own music publishing company, Arnybarn Music, and pursue my dream of being in the music industry. I am sure many people started their own businesses. So I wonder exactly how accurate the unemployment rate really is. I am not sure how they count people like me?

Of course the problems are much more complicated than I explain here but it would serve us all well to pause and take a breath! These new small businesses are taking time to be successful, as expected because it does take time to recover from an economic downturn!

Introducing “This Side of Love“. (To The WORLD!)

I was SOOO excited to find out that our recent song cut by upcoming Contemporary Christian artist, Madalyn McHugh of “This Side Of Love” co-written Greg Shields, Bobby Rennert and myself (Dave Colvin) was being released as the DEBUT SINGLE off her Stepping Stone CD!!

We were already SOO thankful and felt so blessed just to have the song selected for the album, but then to have it be the 1st single – well there are few words to describe how happy we are. We are also so happy for Madalyn too – she has such an amazing voice – well…. read the article the above link references from New Christian Music Now’s website! It is a site where radio programmers can go to hear the latest released songs and download the songs for airplay on their stations!

The message of Hope and Forgiveness and most of all LOVE that this song talks about will now be heard by so many people – that is the real blessing here!
And what is cool is the song starts playing when you open the web page!

Please go read the article, send Madalyn a message about how you like the song on her website at http://madalynmchugh.blogspot.com/p/music.html

My 57th birthday is this Sunday, August 5th. Every year I say to myself “By this time next year I am going to have a song cut!!” And just like my favorite baseball team, the Chicago Cubs, I end up re-stating the phrase to “Well, NEXT YEAR, I will get my first song cut!”
Thanks to Upcoming Pop/Contemporary Christian singer, Madalyn McHugh and my co-writers of the song, “This Side of Love” Greg Shields and Bobby Rennert, I can now say on my 57th birthday that I am a songwriter with my first song cut!!!Madalyn placed “This Side Of Love” (TSOL) on her debut CD, Stepping Stone, and it is Track #1! To hear a sample of the song and find a link to buy the song please go to her website at Madalyn McHugh !

Many thanks really need to go to Greg and Bobby though. The song was written at a songwriters event here in Nashville in early March,  2009 called the Tunesmith Pro Event. Greg and Bobby roomed together for the event and had started the basic beginnings of the song by the time I got there . Even as rough as it was, I knew that it was something special.

As with many co-writing sessions many ideas for lyrics are tossed in for consideration and the clue is to select the best lines and to throw out the ones that don’t work. I have not written very many Christian based songs and learned a lot those couple of days from Greg and Bobby who had written several songs in that genre. My best contribution probably was in asking questions relating to the lyrics and the storyline i.e. “Do we really want to say that in the 1st verse or move it to the bridge?” type of thing. Also at one point the song was pretty lengthy and we were able to pare it down to around 3:43 which was better for possible radio play.

The event centered around 4 groups of 3 songwriters coming up with new songs that would be presented the final day and the winning song would be professionally demoed. I remember bringing home a voice recorder mp3 to play for my wife and she immediately said “That’s a hit!” We played the song for two of the event’s “mentors” and received the same reaction! So we were pretty excited about maybe winning the free demo session.

The judges didin’t like it.

Loooking back, it could be that the other songs were more in the Country genre and country songs have different rules than Contemp Christian or even Pop – which this song easily could be classified as.

But we knew it was a good song so as soon as Greg recorded a fantastic demo, I started pitching the song through my publishing company, Arnybarn Music. Within a year the song had been chosen to be cut on a Ben Richards project!! We were so excited and I thought my annual goal was going to be met at age 55.
The CD project was cancelled.

Again in 2011, someone was interested in the song but postponed indefinitely his recording project.

Then in January of this year, Eric Copeland of Creative Soul Records placed a listing in RowFax, a pitch sheet for artists looking for songs.
I sent the song to Eric and within just a few days he responded that Madalyn wanted to record the song!! While excited, we decided not to tell anyone that it was definitely going to be cut based on the previous two cancellations.

Madalyn held a CD Release concert in her hometown of Caro Michigan July 28th.   My goal has finally been met!

One of the most challenging aspects of this songwriting business occurs when NOTHING is going on with your music or writing. Your creativity may be down or sales have slacked off – heck even “listens” are at a drizzle on your Soundcloud or Reverbnation page….But having worked in the corporate world also, these down times happen in other businesses as well – just maybe in different ways. In accounting each month we had “Month-End-Close” where we would gather all the prior month’s numbers into informative reports that could be reviewed by upper management and even eventually the stockholders (if it was a public company)  The rest of the month was a tine to not only get ready for the next M-E-C but it was a good time to get the workspace organized, do extra analysis work on the reports just produced or learn more about the upcoming change in the software the company was going to start using….
Right now for me at least, things are really slow.  So what can I do?
* I’ve got Arnybarn’s songs uploaded to the Music Libraries. I make sure to be on top of any placement opportunities but there are not too many right now for the kind of music we have. But that can be deceiving. A song might be getting placed right now but I won’t hear about it until the cue sheet is filed with BMI.* I need to finish my copyright project I started – I created a spreadsheet of all my songs that showed the BMI information and the copyright registration number. I was surprised to find over a dozen songs I thought I had gotten registered but still had not been.
* I’ve been working on a new CD for the Fall but trying to figure out how to work with the limited budget I have for that. I need to get the tracks to the point I can take them to an engineer friend of mine so he can do the finishing mastering on them.
* Oh here’s another project. I am working on eliminating having full versions of my songs on the web and replacing them with clips. But it is a tedious time consuming process. I discovered all of my songs (and probably your songs too) have been taken from places I’ve posted and put on other websites to be downloaded for free. They are mostly foreign websites but they are there! My videos too. The websites have a disclaimer that says something like “If you are not legally supposed to download these songs – please do not do so” – like that is going to stop someone?
* I need to coordinate my mp3 and wav files in a more efficient way on my computer(s) –

There are plenty of things I can do when the creative side and business side are not demanding my time and energies!
So, today I cleaned up the office! Please leave a comment and let me know what you do to fill those down tiimes in your songwriting! Thanks!
Musically Yours!Dave
